Xpandourossa_systemica_#1. (2012) Finalist in Sculpture on the Greens (Wyong) - 

Xpandourossa_systemica #1 portrays a graphic tag as a conundrum of growth within a closed (natural) system. Conceived to rest quietly and red-bellied in the sun on cropped grass the work is a reference to the Ouroboros mythological circled-snake symbol of natural cycles, unity and eternity. As a timeless rosette pattern this continuous ‘closed-loop’ appears to be able to expand and contract, with a scissor-like motion. Potentially flexible to change shape whilst rigid in form the device is a universal mathematical microcosm.

Acknowledging interlocking geometry of Islamic taprats this expresses lessons from ‘nature’ on growth being within renewing cycles rather than from our anthropocentric constructs. Our desire for control of nature is suspended during the installation as the embracing lawn grows through the structure, tantalizing viewers to question the installation, possibly to wish to modify, snip and clip (scissor cut) the grassy context. The work is analogous to pre-conceived urges to manipulate our natural support systems, and habitats of other species. The figurative snake in the grass, which is a favorite criticism of the artist.

EAR STAND. (2009 v1) Inspired by the Chinese calligraphic character for “EAR” the device can be a read, felt, smelt and moved but embodies contradictions and unsatisfied desires. It is a counter intuitive play of use and practicality - bulky but open, spatially open but heavy, with charcoal edged that would mark and stain clothing. It can be a typographic error. It is a cry for freedom by the oppressed. It can be a crushing machine, a clothes press, the carbon crisis and carbon sink, a luddite low technology configuration, an impossible wheelbarrow and luggage rack. [version 1 of 3 different pieces]
